Options help: Root canal or Extraction/Bridge???

Visited my dentist last Monday regarding my first molar we had been monitoring and was told I unfortunately need either a root canal or an extraction now. And oh my lord I saw my bonus just flew away. I feel so down that despite taking better care of my teeth, I still keep getting cavities and other issues.

I understand that in the long term, saving the tooth is usually preferable. My problem is that a chunk of the tooth base is already gone, so I am in a dilemma that the cost I pay may end up being wasted if the tooth eventually cracks or fails, leading to possible extraction later anyway.

Has anyone had experience choosing between a root canal with crown versus extraction then bridge? In my case, the root canal and crown option is nearly twice as expensive.

(I have also considered the idea of getting implants for most of my teeth in the future to be done with these issues.)
