Lycoris Recoil Rewatch

Hello there! I am planning to host a rewatch on the anime sub next month (June 17-July 1st) to be exact and was curious if anyone here is interested in joining. How rewatches work there is that we watch 1 episode a day and share comments on a new episode thread I'll post every day at 6PM EST. I've hosted one before and participated in quite a few others and have always learned new ways of seeing my favorite stories and characters. It's also fun to see first timer's reactions too.

If that sounds fun, please check out my thread and comment. Take this as an excuse to gush about Chisato and Takina.

Come Visit Café LycoReco. Lycoris Recoil Interest Thread

Hello there! I can't believe that there has never been a Lycoris Recoil rewatch yet so I have come to fix that! You may be familiar with me from the last rewatch I hosted (Bloom into You) which was a lot of fun, so I would like to host again.

So what's this anime about?

Pulled from MAL

"The number of terrorist acts in Japan has never been lower, thanks to the efforts of a syndicate called Direct Attack (DA). The organization raises orphaned girls as killers to carry out assassinations under their "Lycoris" program. Takina Inoue is an exceptional Lycoris with a strong sense of purpose and a penchant for perfection. Unfortunately, a hostage situation tests her patience, and the resulting act of insubordination leads to her transfer out of DA. Not thrilled about losing the only place she belonged to, she reluctantly arrives at her new base of operations—LycoReco, a cafe in disguise.

Takina's new partner, however, turns out to be quite different from what she imagined. Despite being the famed Lycoris prodigy, Chisato Nishikigi appears almost unconcerned with her duties. She drags Takina along on all kinds of odd jobs under the simple explanation of helping people in need. Takina is even more puzzled when Chisato takes down a group of armed assailants without killing any of them. Feeling like a fish out of water, Takina itches to get reinstated into DA—but Chisato is determined to prove to her that there is more to a life than just taking them."

Why should you watch it?

Lycoris Recoil as an anime original completely took me by surprise when it first aired in Summer 2022. Takina (VA Shion Wakayama) and Chisato (VA Chika Anzai) give some of my favorite vocal performances ever. Their chemistry with each other is just through the roof, so watching their antics always put a dumb smile on my face. They are a pair you could drop in any situation and be entertained by how they complement each other and they even won this year's top couple/ship for it.

Besides the draw of the main pair the show does an excellent job at blending together action and slice of life where both halves reinforce and play off of each other seamlessly. The fights are super cool and fluid with them mainly being street level so you get real close and personal to the action. Furthermore, seeing them in causal settings and dates makes me feel a lot more invested when it does gets serious.

Lastly, the heart of the story is about learning to appreciate the small things in life and having your world opened to new possibilities instead of just following the script given to you. I hold this show close to my heart, and it's a reminder of why I love checking out anime originals. On a final note, without Lycoris Recoil I would've never checked out Bloom into You which I hosted so it only felt right to host this rewatch next.

Rewatch Schedule

My plan is to start the rewatch on Wednesday, June 17th and post threads at 6PM EST. The series is 13 episodes long with 6 shorts that we will watch together after S1, and we will watch at the standard 1 per day. With that the rewatch will end on Wednesday, July 1st.

I hope to be able to rewatch Lycoris Recoil with old fans and newcomers alike. If I've learned anything from the rewatches I've had the pleasure to participate in is that I've learned so many new things about the stories I love. Moreover, I could always use another excuse to watch Chisato and Takina. Here's hoping they release a proper S2 soon!
