Quick Small Sling Comparison [Waterfield vs Sympl vs TomToc]

Waterfield Shinjuku Sling [1.6L, Ballistic Nylon]

  • Pros: very good looking bag, premium feel, sleek metal hardware, compact
  • Mids: unnecessary aqua-guard zippers, no soft-touch lining on phone compartment
  • Cons: expensive at $130
  • Overall: I love the slim metal hardware on this sling and it's by far the best-looking sling I've tried. This is my favorite sling, and it stays in my lineup for when I just need something small to carry the basics.

Sympl Commuter Sling [2.5L, X-Pac]

  • Pros: soft-touch lining on phone compartment
  • Mids: unnecessary aqua-guard zippers, round-ish shape
  • Cons: overpriced at $120, stiff, smaller capacity than advertised (~2L), over-complicated hardware
  • Overall: This sling is too tight and stiff and generally over-engineered. I'll be selling this one.

TomToc Aviator-T33 [2.5L, 70D×140D Nylon]

  • Pros: super malleable, easy-to-use zippers, unbeatable price, straightforward design, spacious at a true 2.5L
  • Mids: no soft-touch lining on phone compartment, strap is a bit too smooth which makes it harder to keep in place
  • Cons: clunky/rattle-y buckle
  • Overall: This sling is hyper-utilitarian in a very good way. The simplicity makes it super easy to use on a regular basis and so this stays in my lineup as my go-to everyday choice.
