Chapter 1
Chloe Channing and I made a bet. Whoever finished the experiment first would become Simon Rhodes' bride.
I threw myself into the data day and night, desperate to win. The day I was about to succeed, an earthquake hit.
I was trapped in the rubble for six days, and on the seventh, Simon pulled me out with swollen, bloodshot eyes.
And it was Simon, too, who personally amputated both my legs in the operating room.
After the surgery, he stroked my hair with something that looked like tenderness, but his words were ice.
"There was no earthquake. I was behind the explosion. Actually, I set the whole thing up."
"Your experiment was so close to working, but then Chloe collapsed at home. You know, another one of her episodes."
"I couldn't just stand by and watch her have another episode because of it."
"Vera, stop competing with her. Once she's stable, I'll give you another wedding."
Fine. This time, I won't fight for it.

Outside the door, I heard my brother Derek Channing's voice. "Isn't this too cruel? With your skill, you could've saved her legs."
Simon didn't even hesitate. "Vera's too competitive. Taking her legs was the only way to shut her down—keep her from clawing for attention over Chloe."
My brother hesitated. "But she's supposed to compete overseas soon. Without her legs... how the hell is she supposed to dance?"
"Vera has me. She doesn't need to parade herself in public. She's a Rhodes now—who'd dare say a word about a missing leg? I'll protect her for the rest of her life."
My brother went silent.
Phantom pain screamed from my stumps, and my face went chalk-white.
Simon walked in and pressed his palm to my forehead, suddenly tense. "What's wrong? Where does it hurt?"
That's when I noticed the ring on his finger. It wasn't our engagement ring.
Simon curled his fingers in, reflexively. "She's been clingy. I put it on to keep her happy."
I stared at the lonely ring on my own hand and let out a hollow laugh. I'd begged him so many times to wear his, and he always refused. Turns out it wasn't about surgical protocol—he just didn't want to.
I pulled the ring off. "Take it back."
Simon laughed, exasperated. "Are you seriously throwing a tantrum right now? You can't just hand this back. I only put it on because Chloe had a breakdown. I was trying to calm her down."
I held his gaze. "But you can put it on for her, just like that?"
The gentle mask on Simon's face finally cracked. "You really have to turn everything into a competition, don't you?"
"If you hadn't stolen twenty years of her life—her family, her comfort—Chloe wouldn't be like this, and I wouldn't have to spend every damn day making it up to her. And let's be honest—the engagement was supposed to be hers from the start."
The hospital room went dead quiet. Simon realized he'd said too much, and his voice softened. "That's not what I meant. Be good. Once she's well, I'll give you a huge—"
I cut him off. "Don't bother. I'll leave. You two can have each other."
Simon's hand froze, then he laughed again. "Leave? Go where? That children's home you fund? So I'll have to make a big show of chasing after you and feed your ego? Don't you get tired of these cheap tricks, Vera?"
I opened my mouth to explain—no, this time it's overseas, and I'm never coming back.
Chloe's custom ringtone shattered the moment. "Simon, I pricked my finger! It's bleeding—oh god, am I going to die?"
Simon snatched his coat. "How can you be so careless? Don't move, I'm on my way."
He didn't glance at me once before he left.
I smiled bitterly and looked down at the empty space where my legs used to be. My mind drifted to the hundreds of missed calls, the endless one-sided texts I'd sent him—and it finally hit me. I was never the one in his heart.
The ring still sat in my palm. I opened my hand and let it drop to the floor. Simon, you've walked away from me too many times. This time, I'm done waiting.
