Why do so many students delay CAT preparation even when they seriously want an MBA?

One thing I’ve noticed while interacting with graduation students is that many genuinely want to crack CAT and pursue an MBA, but still keep postponing preparation.

Not because they lack ambition.

Usually it’s because of things like:

“I don’t have time because of college.”

“Coaching is too expensive.”

“I don’t know where to start.”

“I’ll prepare seriously later.”

“I’m not good at aptitude.”

And honestly, I think this confusion is very common, especially among BCom/BBA/final-year students balancing placements, internships, and academics together.

What surprised me the most is that many students aren’t actually looking for heavy traditional coaching initially. They just want:

proper guidance,

a roadmap,

mentorship,

and clarity about how CAT preparation actually works.

I recently interacted with a few students who said they spent months watching random YouTube videos without any structure, which eventually made preparation feel even more overwhelming.

From what I’ve observed, starting early with the right direction — even with limited time daily — can make a huge difference compared to delaying preparation waiting for “perfect conditions.”

What do you think is the biggest thing stopping students from starting CAT prep seriously?
