I’m an Indian high school student planning to apply for medicine in Hungary, mainly looking at Semmelweis, Debrecen, and Pécs. My parents and I really like the structure of the programs, the campuses, and the international environment, but we don’t have a medical background in the family, so I’m trying to understand how things work after graduation.
My long-term goal is to keep my options open for residency either in Hungary/Europe or abroad (UK/US/other countries if possible). I want to make sure I choose a university that will realistically support those paths.
Here are the main things I’m trying to understand:
- Matching abroad How difficult is it for graduates from Hungarian universities to match into residency in countries like the UK (via PLAB), the US (USMLE), or elsewhere in Europe? Are these universities generally recognized and accepted?
- Preparation for licensing exams Do Semmelweis, Debrecen, or Pécs prepare students well for exams like USMLE or PLAB, or is most of the preparation self-study? Are there structured supports/resources?
- Academic difficulty and pass rates How tough are the exams and progression through the course? Are there high failure or dropout rates, especially in the early years?
- Reputation and competitiveness Do residency programs or employers tend to prefer graduates from certain countries over Hungary? How is the general reputation of these universities internationally?
If anyone is currently studying at or has graduated from Semmelweis, Debrecen, or Pécs, I’d really appreciate your insights or experiences. Even general advice about studying medicine in Hungary as a non-EU student would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance!
