Did we get bad luck or just seeing the truth?

Me and my family often traveled to Italy, a part of our family used to live there. We went there for like 3 to 4 times and we had bad experiences. Last time we went to south italy, got a bad hotel that was cramped and dirty (The images looked nice and larger on google). Tbh, the city itself wasn't that bad, but not the best either, I had a few good experiences there, like the food was delicious, the environment looked alright but not the best place to spend your vacation there.

I was wondering if Italy is actually as bad as how we view it now, or if it's just simply bad luck or choosing the wrong place. I'm willing to give it another try, I have a feeling that we just chose the wrong place and we are to blame.
