[Advice Wanted] 5-Day Beginner-Friendly Section of GR10 (French Pyrenees) – Focus on Scenery & Bivouacking
Hi everyone!
My girlfriend and I are planning our first hiking trip to the French Pyrenees. We are looking for a 5-day section of the GR10 that is suitable for beginners.
Our main goal isn't to cover as many miles as possible, but rather to enjoy the stunning scenery and the experience of bivouacking/wild camping in the mountains.
Our criteria:
Duration:
5 days of actual hiking.
Difficulty:
Beginner-friendly. We are in good shape, but we want a relaxed pace with enough time to set up camp and enjoy the views.
Accessibility:
Crucial! Both the starting point and the ending point must be accessible via public transport (train or bus).
The "Vibe": We’re looking for that classic Pyrenees feel—lakes, peaks, and good spots for a legal bivouac.
Current thoughts:
We’ve heard the GR10 is great because of the trail markings and transport links. We were looking at sections around Cauterets or perhaps the Basque region (though we prefer the higher mountain scenery if it's manageable).
Specific questions:
Which 5-day stretch would you recommend that fits the "low mileage, high scenery" requirement?
Are there specific sections where the public transport connections (SNCF/Buses) are particularly reliable?
Any specific tips for bivouacking rules in the National Park that we should be aware of?
Really any tips on route planning and the French Pyrenees are greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for your help!
