I had the lapidus bunion surgery early 2025. Pain-wise, it was worse than my spinal fusion. I didn’t expect the recovery time. My surgical site got infected a couple weeks in, and it set me back with weight-bearing a few weeks and I was slow to progress. At the year mark, I realized that the bunion had reformed and looked even worse. I also wasn’t able to walk by bearing weight on the inside of my foot, all my weight was placed on my pinky toe/outer half of foot. I got a second opinion of the procedure and outcome around that time. I was told that it didn’t “fail” but was underpronated. She didnt have concerns with non-union, but she said that the outer part of my foot was overcompensating for the issues with the bunion area. I feel like both doctors are being very careful with their point of words, but I’m making assumptions. With that said, she has requested a new CT scan of the foot, but I’ve been trying to figure out how to financially handle that because the estimate estimated out-of-pocket cost is crazy even with insurance.
More recently, I’ve started noticing that the skin looks like it’s breaking down and thinning. I blister even in my wide-width shoes, I can’t walk more than a mile or two, and walking on hard surfaces is horrendous. Has anyone else experienced this? I dont want to do another surgery, as I have a young child and will be starting a new job soon. But also, I dont know how to mitigate the side effects. Any input helps.
