I’ve seen a lot of first-time travelers struggle in India, so here are some things most travel blogs don’t tell you:

  1. Always negotiate prices Auto-rickshaws, markets, even some hotels — if you don’t bargain, you’re overpaying.
  2. Carry toilet paper or wipes Public restrooms often don’t have it. Small thing, big difference.
  3. Use trains for long distances Sleeper trains are cheap and actually a great experience. Flights are faster but you miss the real India.
  4. Don’t trust “helpful strangers” at stations Some will redirect you to fake offices or overpriced services.
  5. Dress simple in smaller towns Helps avoid unwanted attention and makes travel smoother.
  6. Google Maps isn’t always accurate Especially in rural areas. Ask locals when needed.
  7. India is overwhelming at first — that’s normal Give it 3–4 days. After that, it starts making sense. If anyone’s planning a trip and has questions, happy to help 👍
