Backy: Google Photos-style backup, but local-only (Zero-config)

Backy: Google Photos-style backup, but local-only (Zero-config)

Hey everyone,

I built a Google Photos-like app where you can still browse all your photos from your phone, while the “cloud” itself is actually your own PC.

I built Backy because I was frustrated with how complicated "simple" local backups can be. I wanted a way to get my media from my Android phone directly to my PC without cloud storage, subscriptions, or compression. I wanted full control without losing quality — everything stays on your own PC and your own disks.

Why I think it’s different:

  • Zero Configuration: No QR codes, no IP typing, and no port forwarding. It uses auto-discovery to find your PC on the network.
  • Desktop as your "Cloud": Even after deleting backed-up media from your phone to save space, everything remains seamlessly available to browse remotely through the app.
  • Max Quality: No compression. Every pixel and bit of metadata stays intact.
  • Family Ready: You can add family devices and back everything up to the same desktop.

The Android app is currently in Google Play internal testing, so I’m adding early users manually for now. If you don’t mind a few "early beta" bugs and want to help me validate the concept, I’d love your feedback.

If you want to try it out, feel free to DM me or email me at: noamshe.dev@gmail.com (Just send me your Gmail address and I’ll add you to the tester list).

Would love to hear your thoughts! 🙏
