what's move in day like?

I'm an incoming freshman and I have pretty much no idea what to expect. Move-in day is August 15th, and my timeslot is 10:30AM. What do students usually do after? Do we go right into orientation after 3:30, which is I believe around when the last slots are? Or does everything official start the day after move in?

I'm trying to decide whether or not I should set aside the rest of move-in day to spend time with my family. Are there any official events that we're expected to attend after move-in, or is it just likea. leisure time to get to know all the other people in your dorms?

Please let me know!

Personal Statement

I lowkey submitted two personal statements because I impulsively wrote a new one I liked better, so all my schools with Jan 4th and later deadlines got that one (JHU, Brown, Duke, UChicago..). First one was about never being satisfied with myself and connected that to calculus somehow, and second I wrote about my grandma's dementia and how our brains live and die (very weird essays).

Decisions

Acceptances

  • UW-Madison (EA -> accepted)
  • UC Merced
  • UC Riverside
  • UC Santa Cruz
  • UC Santa Barbara
  • CMU (RD)
  • Emory (RD)

Waitlists → Rejected (Opted in, no LOCIs for any)

  • UCSD
  • UCLA
  • UChicago
  • JHU

Rejections

  • Brown
  • UPenn (ED Wharton -> rejected)
  • Yale
  • Columbia
  • Cornell
  • Stanford
  • USC (EA Marshall: defer -> rejected)
  • UC Berkeley
  • UC Irvine (noo school of abgs)
  • Northwestern
  • Tufts
  • Duke

Final Outcome

Stats & machine learning at CMU

Honestly they got my new personal statement that IMO was definitely an upgrade.. wow writing it all out kinda makes me realize I really didn't do anything super big. Compared to everyone I see on here applying to the same schools as me, neither my activities and even aspects of my academics are not up to par with the crazy cracked individuals of this subreddit. Considering iIve wanted to go into tech its kind of unbelievable how lucky I got. It genuinely only takes one. Fellow chuds do not lose hope.

how to get involved in hackathons/projects?

Hey everyone,

I’m an incoming freshman at CMU planning to major in StatML.

I have little to no coding experience, but I want to get involved in hackathons and various projects when I arrive on campus in the fall. What skills should I adopt / hone over the summer? Since I can’t really learn everything at once, I’d appreciate any insight on what the most important things I should focus on (ex: Python, Github, idrk..)

ucsd thinks they're harvard

i visit this subreddit often for entertainment, and seeing so many students who would love to get off the waitlist and are anxiously waiting for their response just angers me. The least SD could do instead of leaving ~10k students in the dark is give them closure via a rejection.

i'm committed somewhere that's (imo) better (especially after the BS they're pulling rn), but it's just frustrating because the waitlist kind of feels like they're just dangling hope for students and is going to make summer a little miserable for a lot of people

i heard even harvard sent out their rejections already brah

What backpacks do you guys use?

I'm an incoming freshman trying to decide on a backpack and I don't have a single clue which size I should opt for.

Do you guys carry around much in your backpack other than your electronics, so much so that you would need a bigger backpack to fit all your stuff? I'll probably carry around a Macbook and an iPad on the daily, but I'm not sure what else I'd need.

I was thinking of getting the backpack above, but it's kind of gigahumongous and I'm wondering if I'll even need that much space..

Rescinded for a D in my major?

update: I REACHED OUT AND THEY SAID MY OFFER REMAINS LETS GOOO

i recommend anyone scared about their admission offer due to grades to reach out first and explain your situation

hey everyone, I got into CMU RD this cycle. I know CMU is generous with second semester grades, but I’m freaking out.

final grades came out, and I happen to have a D in AP Macroeconomics. im a little worried because the major I got into cmu for is Econ.

for context, I have one C in another class, and two Bs and two As. before this, I’ve had straight As throughout All of high school.

our family has been through a lot recently, and I’ve had a lot of additional / unexpected responsibilities that were extremely hard to juggle with school (also senioritis hit just a little). should I email the admissions office? Any advice or insight would be appreciate…. I’m so scared guys

For people who got off the UCLA waitlist: when did you submit your LOCIs?

For those who got off the UCLA waitlist, I'd be interested to know when you guys submitted your letters (if you did write a letter) & grades. Do they prioritize the applications of those who submitted their additional information earlier, or is it completely randomized/by major?
