KPMG Application Changed to Denied Before Referral Screening — Does This Mean the Position Was Filled?

I have a KPMG employee referral screening interview tomorrow and I’m a little confused about one of my applications.
I applied to two Summer/Fall 2027 Tax Associate positions. One of my applications was under review but recently changed to denied. My other application is still under review.
Does anyone know if KPMG applications automatically change to “denied” when a position expires, closes, or they finish hiring for the role? Or does “denied” usually mean recruiting actually reviewed my application and rejected me?
I’m especially confused because I still have my KPMG employee referral screening scheduled for tomorrow. I’m wondering if the position simply filled and my referral screening could still lead to consideration for my other application or another Tax Associate position.
Has anyone had something similar happen with KPMG?

Big 4 Partner Referral for Midwest Office

I’m currently a staff accountant in the oil and gas industry, and I’m interested in transitioning to a Big 4 firm, preferably in the Midwest region and specifically the Chicago office. I’m currently in Texas A&M master of accounting program so it’s a referral for the 2028 winter internship when it opens up.

I know a partner at one of the Big 4 firms who is based in the Southern region. If he refers me for a position in the Midwest, how much weight would a partner referral carry even though he is in a different region? Would a referral from a partner significantly increase my chances of being selected for an interview or position in the Chicago office?
