Context: I am a 20 year old female college track athlete (Pole Vault). I will soon step into a coaching role instead of competing due to my health overtaking me.

All major joints experience subluxations. I have non hormonal birth control, and my flares and subluxations worsen exponentially before my period.

Prior history: I had a torn labrum fixed on left shoulder in 2023 (6 anchors) as well as capsule repair and something else to tighten me up. (This was prior to my EDS diagnosis.) I then had frozen shoulder due to scar tissue build up and after a second surgery to remove it I still sublux Every. Single. Day.

I now have a suspected newly torn left hip labrum.

Prior to my hEDS diagnosis I chalked up my injuries and constant joint pain to being a multi sport athlete.

Saving some details, I pinched my sciatica when squatting and I had my boyfriend apply light traction to my ankle to relieve some pain. After a VERY VERY little amount of pressure, he pulled my joint out. When it went back in I knew I had an impingement so I made him do it again to release whatever was stuck in my joint from the previous subluxation. This was my first subluxation occurring “down” and most happen in my hips when stand favoring one leg.

This happened in January and now May I am still experiencing pain. I have since stopped working out entirely.

Based on X rays taken, I have hip dysplasia and require femoral reshaping, PAO and labral repair. I don’t qualify for only labral repairs due to my dysplasia and bone structure. I was told I will retear and not heal with only labrum surgery.

Some days my hip doesn’t hurt at all, and some days I can’t even walk. I golfed yesterday and eventually fell on the course due to my pain.

I don’t want to lose my chance to walk properly if I don’t heal well, so I’m extremely nervous to get PAO.

Any advice? Any past experiences? PAO seems like my best bet if I can’t even golf 9 holes.

TLDR: PAO surgery doubts. Advice needed.
