I’m working on an IB History HL IA focused on the political differences between East and West Germany during the Cold War (Berlin Wall era).
My current research question is:
“To what extent did the division of Berlin (1961–1989) create fundamentally different political systems in East and West Germany?”
I’m aiming to focus on:
state control (Stasi vs democratic institutions)
political participation and elections
ideological control vs pluralism
I’m looking for:
feedback on whether this question is too broad or narrow for an IA
suggestions for strong academic sources (especially JSTOR or historians like Fulbrook)
advice on how to structure a strong comparative argument
Any help or critique would be appreciated.
