Chance, my 13 year old man is on the decline.

I rescued my 13 year old American Bulldog, Chance, when he was already 10. He’s been on a decline since January when he was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma of the spleen.

This is my first dog and I’ve never had to make the decision of euthanasia. It feels like a death sentence and I can’t even imagine doing it, but I know loving dog owners have to do it every day.

The vet put the ball in my court, but since I got him, he’s never been an energetic, greet me at the door, cuddle on the couch type of guy. So I don’t have much to compare it to. He’s had some recent accidents in the home (one of them he pooped in his own bed) decreased mobility, and he often stares off into space unresponsive. He also wakes me up twice per night to go out, sometimes to pee sometimes to stare. The vet also said if the tumor ruptures, it would be a painful death. Idk I’m just struggling with making that choice when his personality is mostly still here. He eats, drinks, sleeps in his bed. I’m afraid he’s in pain because they are so good at hiding it.

Any advice on how to reframe euthanasia or tell tale signs on the right time are helpful. Thank you!
