Hard Transition into Factory Maintenance

Started a new factory maintenance job after working in apartment maintenance. The job overall is good, but it feels very overwhelming. Most jobs I’ve had I learn some basic things within the first month. However, with this current job it’s hard to learn even the most basic stuff. There is a lot to learn and I feel scattered brained.

It could be the guy that’s training me. He doesn’t hardly explain what’s going on so I have to press him constantly to get an explanation on stuff. Also he’s not very patient and grumpy a lot. Eventually he will explain stuff and it is helpful.

I know it’s only been a month, but I’m wondering if I’m getting bad training or that I’m slow at picking up the job. When they explain stuff to me (especially conceptually) I have to keep asking for them to explain it multiple times before I can understand it. I’m afraid that I’m just not mechanically inclined enough or too slow to keep up.

Best Bend in Handle Bow Design

I’ve been wanting to make a bend in handle style short bow for sometime. Similar to an eastern woodlands Native American style bow. I’m thinking a 28 in draw length at 45-50lbs, open to whatever width. I’m looking at using osage, hickory, white oak, black locust, or whatever hard wood I can get my hands on. My question is what would be the shortest length I could make a bow of this style, but also make it as fast shooting as possible? Are there any designs I can copy?

Finally Landed a Commercial Role!

I would like to thank everyone for the advice on here. After 1.5 years of searching I have finally landed a maintenance job at a small bird seed factory. They make high quality bird seed pellets for parrots, chickens, and wild birds. It will be a mix of facilities/ industrial maintenance. They said the job would entail maintaining factory equipment like mixing machines, conveyor belts, plumbing, electrical, hvac, and other facility work. I guess you would call that a multi-craft maintenance tech.

My experience is in apartment/ hotel maintenance. I’m a little nervous about my skills being inadequate or that I’ll have trouble keeping up. I’m wondering what should I expect? And how do I set myself up for success? I start in two weeks.

Maintenance to Stationary Engineer

I’ve been considering a career in facility maintenance and maybe a boiler operator. I don’t know if I would enjoy being a boiler operator, but I can confidently say I love being in maintenance. I am wondering if it is possible to work commercial maintenance at a large facility and work up to a boiler operator? If so what would that look like? Join an apprenticeship or get an apprenticeship through a company? I was considering working at a large hotel, school, or hospital.
