Male Paralegal

Hey,

So I’ve been working with a large auto insurance company based in NYC for about 7 months now. I’m still in the claims department helping mostly with customer service. However I do also assist with interpreter work for statements as I am trilingual. My friend got me this job and he happens to be an attorney there. We speak on and off and he provided me with the idea of becoming a paralegal as he can pull some strings for me.

I find that I enjoy the legal aspect of the job as far as discussing matters with attorneys and other paralegals. I think I would prefer being a paralegal compared to becoming a claims adjuster.

I have noticed that every single person at my job that’s a paralegal is a woman, and I know it is field dominated by women. I’m wondering if anyone could provide me with insight as to why that is? And if being a male in this space would somehow hinder me?

I’ve read online it is because most males strive to be higher up the legal ladder but I believe being a paralegal would be better for me as I am also a professional musician so I need peace of mind and time! I don’t want to think about work too much outside of work. Of course I expect it to be a little hectic but that’s life.

Also I would appreciate any advice or useful insights for someone that has no direct experience/education in the field. I have a very surface level understanding of everything but I learn very quick. I believe once I master legalese it shouldn’t be too difficult. But I don’t actually know how to prepare!

Thank you truly.
