I’m not the only one that fell in love with this game just to get disappointed by the ending . It lacked the cohesiveness and emotion of Tsushima’s ending for me . This is my attempt at a small rewrite of the final mission that might have felt a little better

Everything progresses normally up until you leave koga fortress . Rather than saito already being at your home he arrives there basically with you ( it being implied that he followed you on horse back after your escape) accompanied by the black guard . He demands a dual with the ghost and the first phase of his boss fight plays out the same . After Atsu gets disarmed, jubei rushes to her aid . The fight continues as in the game but before saito can strike down Jubei Atsu pushes him to the side and takes a deep cut to her side , mortally wounding her .

But she’s not dead yet . Her rage keeps her barely alive enough to fight . Thus begins the final phase.

You are slowly losing health while your spirit slowly regenerates keeping you in the fight . The visual of the burning tree persists until you finally disarm and kill saito , scaring of the black guard but collapsing shortly after.Kiku rushes to your side along with jubei and oyuki and your final words are “live the life I never could “ .
