EDIT: I’m not saying they should promote any of these characters to main ones but just perhaps expand their roles by giving them a few more scenes and/or lines. There is quite a lot of scope to do this in the first couple of seasons as they have a lot of excess time to fill as these books are short.

Also I’m talking about their roles compared to the movies. All of these characters (except arguably Blaise) had reduced roles in the movies overall.

When comparing the old ‘Coming Soon’ HBO Max trailer with the new one, did they change the colour grading or simply put up the brightness?

Genuinely curious as I’m not an expert in this field at all.

I love that Arabella Stanton *somewhat* resembles Hermione from these amazing fan arts.

I believe Arabella was chosen not because of her looks but because of her talent and it’s a just a bonus that she kinda looks like how myself and many others imagined Hermione from the books.

Links to where I found these great pieces of art can be found in a comment I’ve posted below.

I know he’s a minor character, but is anyone else excited to hopefully see Pigwidgeon in the show?

I love that in the books, Sirius genuinely felt bad about Ron not having a pet anymore because of the Scabbers situation so he gave him the tiny owl that delivered his letter and Hogsmeade permission slip to Harry on the Hogwarts Express at the end of PoA.

From the ‘Finding Harry’ documentary, they were clearly going all in on animatronics for the owls, Scabbers etc so this gives me hope that they’ll create one for Pigwidgeon!

1 year ago we got our first leak from filming of the show which was the trip to London Zoo

We got our second look at Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter (after the official announcement of Season 1 filming with the picture of him in his Hogwarts robes), and our first looks at the Dursleys and Piers Polkiss.

I remember seeing this and was delighted that Petunia and Dudley looked quite book accurate, Dominic was giving Book Harry vibes and that they were including Piers Polkiss this time. Also Dudley and Piers’ attire pretty much confirmed that the show would be taking place in the ‘90s like the books!

I love that they're taking the fact that Harry's hair sticks up at the back seriously!

Having seen a few posts on here recently which highlighted the attention to detail that the show is giving from the 'Finding Harry' documentary on HBO Max, I decided to rewatch it the other day.

I noticed that in some of the shots of Dominic McLaughlin behind the scenes, hair clips can be seen on the back of his head and product was being used which is surely to make sure that his hair sticks up at the back like it is mentioned a few times in the book, in particular when comparing it to James who had the exact same characteristic.

“He [James] wore glasses, and his hair was very untidy. It stuck up at the back, just like Harry’s did."
- Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 12: The Mirror of Erised

“James’s hair stuck up at the back exactly as Harry’s did..."
- Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 28: Snape's Worst Memory

“With a leap of pleasure, Harry recognized his father, his untidy black hair stuck up at the back like Harry’s, and he too wore glasses."
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Chapter 10: Kreacher's Tale

This is yet another reason why I have faith in the people making the show to include details from the books that the movies didn't bother with.

How are we feeling about pop culture/real event references from the Muggle world in the show?

I love that the show is really emphasising that it’s primarily set in the ‘90s as that is the canonical timeline from the books and it’s something that will differentiate it from the films to some extent which seemed to be set contemporarily.

From the leaks we got last year, we saw that they’re using props such as this real Nirvana concert poster from 1991 which could be seen outside the Leaky Cauldron when Hagrid and Harry arrive there and this newspaper featuring Princess Diana from the Little Whinging set when they were filming Vernon’s weird day. I also remember seeing football (that’s soccer for any Americans) sticker cards from the ‘90s in the cupboard under the stairs in the teaser.

Personally I love this and hope they continue with it throughout the seasons as little Easter Eggs for eagle-eyed viewers. I thought of an example because the World Cup is on right now. They could reference the 1994 World Cup having just happened before Harry goes off to the Quidditch World Cup at the start of Season 4.

However just to be clear, I don’t think they should go overboard with this and only include a handful of references at most at the start of each season during the Muggle world sequences before obviously focusing on the Wizarding world. I’d love to hear your guys’ thoughts and ideas.

Me to Steve Kloves after watching MovieFlame’s deep dives on the HP movie scripts:

They’ve been really interesting watches. Don’t get me wrong Steve Kloves is NOT exonerated from any blame when it comes to the criticisms of the films but it just made me think that maybe people, including myself, have been too harsh on him. There are so many other factors that lead to what we saw in the movies such as actor’s interpretation, improvisation and of course the director’s input.

There’s no doubt that he still elevated Hermione’s importance at the expense of Ron and invented some contradictory and dumb scenes. However, he did try to include many things from the books or original scenes that were pretty good which ended up getting cut or changed.

The best examples of these from the PoA video in my opinion were Lupin’s line explaining to Harry that James could turn into a Stag and Ron’s heroic sacrifice when being dragged under the Whomping Willow by Sirius. Also he added more scenes that hinted towards Ron and Hermione’s romance that were cut and he was not responsible for Harry and Hermione holding hands and getting touchy.

Yes of course he is partly to blame for the problems of the movies, but I feel like the fandom sometimes single him out when it really falls on multiple people. The exception would be that many people blame Dumbledore’s demeanour in the GoF movie on director Mike Newell. In fact, I think a lot of the bad things about GoF falls on Mike Newell plus I don’t envy the job Steve Kloves had to cut down such a long book into 2.5 hours.

Anyway just a thought as one of the main reasons I’m in favour of the show is to correct the mistakes and shortcomings of the films which, I’ll be totally honest, I’ve put a lot of the blame on Steve Kloves for.

Characters who just kinda disappeared in the films that I hope the show gives justice to

Oliver Wood:
- I know he came back for a 2 second cameo in the final film but they cut him from PoA and GoF.
- I hope we see him going a bit crazy trying to win the Quidditch cup in his final year and see him at the World Cup having signed for a pro team.

Angelina Johnson:
- They recast her for GoF but then cut her and the whole Quidditch plotline in OotP.
- It would be great to see her as captain of the Quiddtich team and for her to come back for the Battle of Hogwarts.

Gilderoy Lockhart:
- St Mungo’s was cut from the OotP movie therefore Lockhart’s return.
- I hope they include this in the show and have the actor from S2 come back.

Colin Creevey:
- I know the actor from the CoS movie had outgrown the role and they elected not to recast him but to create the new character of Nigel to replace him.
- I’d love for the show to include Colin and his brother Dennis in the later seasons. Colin’s death will be absolutely gut wrenching to watch in the last season.

Stan Shunpike:
- Stan was cut from GoF, OotP and DH.
- It would be great to see him at the Quidditch World Cup trying to woo a group of Veelas, the plotline of him being arrested as a alleged Death Eater and him participating in the Battle of the Seven Potters under the Imperius Curse.

Viktor Krum:
- I know they filmed scenes of him at Bill and Fleur’s wedding but they made him dance with Hermione??? That didn’t happen in the book and it was Ron who danced with her while Harry (disguised as an apparent Weasley cousin) talked to Krum.
- Anyway I hope he makes this return in the final season.

Rita Skeeter:
- Her role was cut down massively in the GoF movie and she was completely omitted from OotP and HBP.
- I hope we see the whole plotline of her being an illegal Animagus, Hermione blackmailing her to interview Harry about his experience with Voldemort in the graveyard and her attending at Dumbledore’s funeral.

Hagrid, Peeves and (hopefully) Arthur Weasley all sharing a flat…

I thought I recognized Peter Serafinowicz from somewhere. I eventually remembered him from Guardians of the Galaxy and John Wick 2 as well. Also, it turns out he provided the voice for Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace. I’m so excited to see him as Peeves in the show!

When the benefits of a TV show over movies will really show

Some people might say Season 4 (Goblet of Fire) because that's when the books became significantly longer, the world-building was expanded and of course so much was cut from the movie e.g. S.P.E.W., Ludo Bagman, Winky, Sirius’ visit and Barty Crouch Jr’s full backstory. Others may argue Season 3 (Prisoner of Azkaban) because this is when the movies began deviating from the books in terms of restructuring events and omitting entire subplots such as the Quidditch season, the Firebolt storyline and most egregiously in my opinion, the Marauder's backstory.

However, I'd make the argument that we'll begin to see the full benefits of having a TV show over movies straight away with Season 1. It's been confirmed that they'll be adding new scenes such as Dumbledore visiting the Flamels, McGonagall delivering Hermione's Hogwarts letter as well as scenes at the Burrow and Malfoy Manor. I don't mind this so long as they don't break canon and make logical sense. Essentially, scenes that most likely happened but we didn't hear about in the books as they are told from Harry's perspective.

Furthermore, although the Philosopher's Stone movie is a very good adaptation, they still changed and/or omitted a few things so with an 8 episode season, this is a great opportunity to include everything and improve further on what was already a faithful telling of the book. Here are some things I thought of:

- Vernon's weird day
- The Dursleys and Harry staying at the while escaping the letters
- Harry meeting Draco in Madam Malkins
- PEEVES!!!
- More lessons such as Herbology, Astronomy and History of Magic
- The Midnight Duel plotline
- The second Quidditch match vs Hufflepuff
- Harry overhearing Snape and Quirrell's conversation in the Forest
- The whole Norbert subplot
- The Centaurs arguing in the Forest after Firenze saves Harry
- End of term exams
- Hermione solving the potions riddle obstacle

Anyway because of all of this, I would argue that we'll start to see the benefits of the TV show format straight off the bat. The producers will know that one of the major criticisms of this show when it was announced was people questioning if it was neccessary because we already have the movies. They'll know that one of the big selling points of the show will be to make it distinct from the films and improve on them.

(For the record, I never held the opinion that the show is unnecessary as I’m a huge fan of the books and although the films were good, they often disappointed as adaptations so I’ve been longing for this show for years.)

The show could do what GoT did and have many significant dramatic sequences such as battles and major deaths in penultimate episodes.

Game of Thrones was famous for the penultimate episodes of each season which were usually used for big battles like S2’s Battle of Blackwater, S4’s Battle for the Wall, S6’s Battle of the Bastards and S8’s Battle of King’s Landing (I try to forget about that one lmao). There were also some shocking deaths in the penultimate episodes of the other seasons.

I was thinking that the show could take inspiration from its fellow HBO series and this could work from a structural point of view from seasons 3 onwards. It probably wouldn’t work for the seasons 1 and 2 as the climactic drama happens in the final two chapters of the books so that’ll most likely be the events of the finales. Anyway here are my ideas:

Season 3 (Prisoner of Azkaban):
Penultimate - The Shrieking Shack scene with all the plot twists.
Finale - The Time Turner sequence and end of term.

Season 4 (Goblet of Fire):
Penultimate - The Third Task, Cedric’s death, Voldemort’s return and the duel in the Graveyard.
Finale - Barty Crouch Jr reveal, Fudge vs Dumbledore argument and end of term.

Season 5 (Order of the Phoenix):
Penultimate - The Battle of the Department of Mysteries and Sirius’ death.
Finale - Dumbledore vs Voldemort, the Prophecy reveal and end of term.

Season 6 (Half-Blood Prince):
Penultimate - The Cave, the Battle of the Astronomy Tower and Dumbledore’s death.
Finale - Snape reveals he is the Half-Blood Prince, aftermath of the battle and Dumbledore’s funeral.

Season 7 (Deathly Hallows):
Penultimate - The Battle of Hogwarts, Diadem is destroyed, Fred’s death and Voldemort kills Snape.
Special 2hr Grand Finale - Snape’s memories, Harry goes to the Forest, King’s Cross limbo with Dumbledore, the final duel with Voldemort and the Epilogue.

What do you guys think? Feel free to disagree with me or come up with some alternative ideas.

Hopefully we see Professor Aurora Sinistra in Season 1

I was going through which actors have been confirmed to be playing Hogwarts teachers and I noticed that they haven’t announced an actress for the Astronomy professor Aurora Sinistra. I know her role is very small in the books but I thought this was strange as every other teacher of Harry’s first year subjects have been announced. Also they revealed other Hogwarts staff such as Filch, Madam Hooch and Madam Pomfrey.

She very briefly appeared in the movies but had no lines and no Astronomy classes were shown. However, hopefully she will be included in the show as Harry does attend Astronomy classes on Wednesdays at midnight in the first book. Perhaps they for some reason just didn’t include her in the casting announcements due to her role being minor? With that being said, they did announce Griphook who has a very small role in the first book.

I totally understand not casting Trelawney or the Arithmancy, Ancient Runes and Muggle Studies professors yet as those subjects aren’t relevant until the third book.

EDIT: I’ve been informed that they have cast Septima Vector the Arithmancy professor which surely means that they’ve cast Sinistra.

If they release a clip early, it should be a scene that wasn’t adapted in the movies.

They will most likely do this in early December but I think they should reveal a full 1-2 minute clip from one of these scenes:

- Vernon’s weird day
- Harry at muggle school
- Peeves’ introduction
- Professor Binns teaching History of Magic
- Draco challenging Harry to a duel
- Quidditch match vs Hufflepuff

This counters the “What’s the point of this? We’ve seen it before” argument some people make and highlights that the show will be distinct from the movies which would be a good marketing strategy in my opinion.

Recasts are unfortunate but it’s something the movies had to deal with as well

It was such a shame to hear the news that Gracie Cochrane will not be returning to play Ginny for Season 2 but there must be a good reason for this and I respect her and her family's choice. She looked like great casting but I'm sure that whoever replaces her will do a great job. Of course Ginny is a major character in the story overall which is unfortunate but the silver lining with this situation is that her role is very minimal in the first book so at least they have a sort of clean slate for Season 2 when her role will be much more significant. I'd rather they recast now than between two of the later seasons.

To be totally honest, it was always in the realms of possibility that some characters would have to be recast in the show and it made me realize that this happened in the movies more than people might think. The first two are the most significant ones but I decided to include some student characters who have been cast in the show and may have larger roles than they did in the movies and also perhaps than the books.

Albus Dumbledore:
- Played by Richard Harris in PS and CoS
- Replaced by Michael Gambon for PoA, GoF, OotP, HBP and DH2

Lord Voldemort:
- Played by Richard Bremmer in PS
- Replaced by Ralph Fiennes for GoF, OotP and DH1 + 2

Lavender Brown:
- Played by two different uncredited actresses in the early films
- Replaced by Jessie Cave for HBP and DH1 + 2

Parvati Patil:
- Played by Sitara Shah in PoA
- Replaced by Shefali Chowdhury for GoF, OotP and HBP

Pansy Parkinson:
- Played by Genevieve Gaunt in PoA
- Replaced by Scarlett Byrne for HBP, DH1 + 2

Angelina Johnson:
- Played by Danielle Tabor in PS, CoS and PoA
- Replaced by Tiana Benjamin for GoF

Katie Bell:
- Played by Emily Dale in PS and CoS
- Replaced by Georgina Leonidas for HBP and DH1 + 2

Alicia Spinnet:
- Played by Leila Sutherland in PS
- Replaced by Rochelle Douglas for CoS

On another note, due to legal trouble the actor who played Vincent Crabbe in the films was fired but instead of recasting Crabbe they rewrote things so Blaise Zabini would take his role for the final film. The movies also removed Colin Creevey after CoS as the actor aged out of the role and elected not to recast him but to create the new character of Nigel who essentially took on Colin’s role from GoF onwards.

I'd love for the cast of the show to be as consistent as possible but I'll be realistic that this may happen again for a multitude of reasons. Hopefully if it does happen, it involves more minor characters. I know there are other characters that were technically recast in the movies but some of them are very minor characters in the books as well and sometimes these were hardly noticeable.

Can’t wait for haters of the show who have only watched the movies to complain about these points in season 1 only for them to finally understand that it’s an adaptation of the books, not a remake of the films.

“Why has Harry already been given Dudley’s second bedroom?”

“Why doesn’t Quirrell have a turban when Harry first meets him?”

“Why are they introducing Draco early before Hogwarts?”

“Why did Harry go back to the Dursley’s after Hagrid took him to get his school supplies?”

“Why are Fred and George the first of the Weasleys to introduce themselves to Harry and not Ron?”

“Why did they introduce Neville before Hermione?”

“Why is Neville with the trio when they discover Fluffy?”

“Why do James and Lily look so young?”

“Why are there other people in the mirror?”

“Why is Snape refereeing a Quidditch match?”

“Why isn’t Ron with them for detention in the forest?”

“Why did Hermione go with Harry and not stay with Ron after the chess obstacle?”

Simple answer:
That’s how it was in the book, the movies altered a lot of things. The show is NOT a “remake”.
