I just started learning, I have a very basic question!

I speak four languages and I always loved learning. Very recently I started learning ASL, but I do have a question on the methodology:

Through my years of learning foreign languages, I found that translating wasn’t the best tool to learn. I did my best to erase my mother language from my brain while studying, and try to associate words with pictures and concepts rather than the translation. When I watch videos in ASL thoughI just keep mentally speaking over them, eg. I would think “hello, HOW YOU”. Is this ok? Do fluent hearing people eventually stop thinking the words in their head?

I’m more curious than anything! I’m learning because I think it’s an amazing language, I don’t know anyone who’s Deaf or HoH but I’d love to be involved in the community once I’m able to have a conversation.
