Yet another Starship Troopers (1997) opinion
Starship Troopers' reputation preceded itself as a strongly satirical anti-war movie with a humorous touch. It's known for it's well veiled but strong message, but maybe the message was too hidden for me because I can't watch it as anything more than a response to star wars. "What if star wars was real" type deal. Similar to the recently popular, hyper-violent "what if superheroes were real" trope, which I am far less of a fan of.
I imagined being in the world of the story as a civilian of a space war against ugly, mindless bugs and I felt helpless picturing the media literate satire-experts taking the bugs' side and getting all morally grey on me when the bugs are overtly trying to kill humanity and earth. At what point does a story immerse itself so deeply into it's own message that it is impossible to pull out? In this case Starship Troopers is presented as a big piece of in-story propaganda so the viewer is left in the dark about the true morality of the bugs, but what kind of a person is so in love with subversion and moral relativity that they take the side of an ugly brain sucking demon over even a less than pleasant human being *even* in the context of a presentation warped by bias? Is that person you? I kind of associate this type of mindset with the redditor archetype so please revisit Starship Troopers below. There can never be too much discussion about this cult classic.
Summary: I prefer to take things at face value so in Starship Troopers a bug is a bug and not a metaphor of a viet cong. Why do people love to dig deep into the satire of the movie when the sillyness, Star Wars parody and basic "war is hell, propaganda is funny and bad" messaging is enough for a good movie?
