As an Indian viewer, Thai GL honestly feels dreamy

I’m from India where even now decriminalizing homosexuality is something society is still “debating”. There’s barely any queer representation in mainstream movies/web series and even when there is, it’s usually very toned down and the whole story becomes about acceptance, family drama, society etc. Rarely about queer people just being in love and living their lives normally.

Then Netflix randomly introduced me to Thai GL through Lookmhee and Sonya and I genuinely felt like my whole perspective changed.

I had never seen queer love shown so naturally before. They’re both girls but the story doesn’t constantly remind you of that. They just have a proper love story like any straight couple would. There are problems around them being together sometimes, but the entire plot isn’t just about “society accepting them”.

Then I fell into the rabbit hole and watched so many Thai GL series and they all felt so soft and beautiful to me. It honestly made me realize how starved I was for this kind of representation without even knowing it.

From an Indian perspective it almost feels unreal sometimes. I can’t imagine us making queer stories like this anytime soon. I’m obsessed with these.
