My husband invited his mother to live with us without asking me. I came home today and my locks were changed.
My husband and I have been married for six years. We own a small house together. Both names on the deed.
His mother has been having health problems. Nothing life-threatening, but she can't live alone anymore. He mentioned moving her in "someday." I said we'd talk about it when the time came.
The time came last week. I got home from work and her furniture was in my living room.
I was calm. I asked my husband what was happening. He said she needed to move in "temporarily" and he "didn't want to bother me with it" because I'd been stressed at work.
I told him we needed to talk about this privately. He said there was nothing to talk about. His mother was staying.
I slept in the guest room that night. Not because of her. Because I couldn't look at him.
This morning I went to work like normal. When I came home tonight, my key didn't work.
I knocked. His mother answered. She said, very sweetly, "Oh, we changed the locks. We didn't think you'd mind."
I asked where my husband was. She said he was inside, watching TV.
I called him from the porch. He answered. I asked him to come outside.
He came out and said the locks were changed because his mother "didn't feel safe" with me having a key. I asked why. He said she was worried I might "come in and cause a scene."
I have never caused a scene in my life. I work in HR. I de-escalate conflicts for a living.
I told him I wanted the new key. He said I could have it "once I calmed down and agreed to be civil."
I'm sitting in my car in my own driveway writing this. My phone is at 12%. I don't know where to go. My parents live three hours away. My best friend is out of town.
I'm not sure if this is real. I'm not sure if I'm overreacting. But I think my husband just locked me out of my own house.
TL;DR: Husband moved his mother in without asking. When I objected, they changed the locks and won't give me a key. I'm sitting in my car in my own driveway.
