Hi everyone,

Looking for advice on this situation. So I am in the last month of my lease currently, and I’ll be moving soon. When I signed the lease it stated that the landlord was responsible for all utilities and it was included in my base rent.

Last week, I came home in the evening to my power off. I reached out to him and he asked if I had paid my electric bill with ComEd. I informed him that I didn’t have a ComEd account because electricity is included in my lease. He then explained that it was an error in the lease and he did not intend for it to be written that way. He said he had been paying my electric bill for the last 11 months and that I had been receiving “free” electricity. He recommended I call ComEd and set up an account, which I did that night.

The issue is that I am not legally responsible for my electricity. And I am not sure how ComEd would have cut off my power unless he (the account holder) told them to. Also, when I receive my first bill I don’t believe I should pay it because that’s not what is stated in my lease. I’m not sure if I should send him the bill or how to proceed.

I’m looking for any and all advice on how to handle this. I’m certainly not trying to make the situation more difficult for anyone, but I also want to know if he purposefully had my electricity turned off.

Thanks so much!
