BI-RADS 4a…. Thoughts?
I am a 40 year old, with a family history of breast cancer.
I have had some on and off pain in my left breast and nipple, nothing too serious, I could continue on with my day for a couple of months. About 3 weeks ago, if began getting quite painful. the breast felt swollen and heavy. The nipple felt hard. The pain began radiating down my arm, neck and shoulder blade. This is still continuing now. This caused me to examine the breast. I have noted where the pain is coming from there was a slight bruising in colour, some marks I had previously put down to stretch marks, a slight indent and the areola is no longer symmetrical and has drooped about 1/2 a cm to 1cm. when feeling the chest I can’t feel any lamps rather a hardened area but seems very near a breast bone, but am not feeling it on the other breast.
The doctor has noted swelling, the droop in the areola, thickening and multiple lumps but couldn’t quite make out what it felt like to her. I had been referred for a mammogram and ultrasound and the results came back with a BI-RADS score of 4a.
Radiologist has recorded 10.99mm well defined hypoechoic solid lesion with macro lobulations noted. mild internal vascularity on colour doppler and suspicion of surrounding parenchymal infiltration at 3 o’clock. It was recommended that a biopsy be done which will be completed next week.
Going over the findings with my GP, I was I guess a little nonchalanT. She asked how I was feeling and I had mentioned okay, because I know there is a high chance of this being benign. She had responded that “No, you need to prepare for this being cancer.” She said 1 or 2 different findings might be a low chance but the fact calcification, blood flow, vascular activity and infiltration, we need to look at it being cancer than not.
I don’t know if I’m in denial, but I’m still not sold. Has anyone else had similar?
