Hey all – looking for some real-world advice from people who actually live with EVs.

We’ve got a baby on the way, and I’m trying to figure out the smartest move car-wise. Our budget is around 50k.

Context:

Living in an apartment (no dedicated charger – would mostly rely on standard plug + public charging)

Don’t do heaps of long trips, but want flexibility for the odd weekend away

I’ve been looking at the MGS5 (62kwh), Atto 2 / 3. I haven’t had a chance to test drive any Geely’s. The MGS5 has been the best so far imo in terms of boot size and drivability at that price.

But now seeing the Atto 3 “Evo” (800V, faster charging, better battery etc.) is likely coming later this year.

My thinking (tell me if I’m off here):

bit worried that buying a current-gen EV now means I’ll be stuck charging all the time – especially without a proper home charger. Feels like the next wave (800V etc.) might be a pretty big step up in day-to-day convenience.

So I’m torn between:

Buying now (MGS5)

Waiting ~6–9 months for the newer tech

Questions:

How painful is EV ownership actually without a home charger?

Does faster charging (like 800V) make a noticeable difference in real life, or is it overhyped?

If you were in my position, would you wait or just get into something now?

Keen to hear honest takes – especially from people in apartments or similar setups.

Appreciate any advice 🙏
