Hello everyone,
I’m currently a support engineer for a Saas company in the US. I’m currently making 55K and live in a higher COL area in Texas. Currently, apartment rent and my car note are digging into 60% of my monthly income.
I recently interviewed for a DCT role and it’s near my childhood home. I am currently waiting to hear back to see if I am hired or not. In the event that I do get hired, I have arranged to stay at one of my parent’s properties and not have to pay rent. Just me and my family(wife and child), in a decent house with a yard. I would take over remodeling, utilities and property taxes as part of the deal. That completely eliminates rent and i only have to worry about my car note and other small bills I have. The thing is, I have a bachelors degree in CS, but due to the market, I have not been able to land an SWE role, mostly sys admin and IT help desk.
The reason I am posting this is because I am unsure if this job would help advance my CS/IT career. I primarily want to focus on Devop positions once I get more experience , but it’s just out of my league at the moment.
The pay is better, but nothing drastic, it would be a bump from 55K to 62K, but again, no rent to worry about. I’m so confused on what to do. Am I making a mistake if I get the job?
