What to know about rural Honduras

Good evening,

I am coming to Honduras here in a few weeks and will be in some of the rural villages and was wanting to know if there is any things that would be handy to know. Like things to bring and keep handy or any other advice. Should I carry a knife or could that get me in some trouble. Here where I am from in rural US we always have a saying to not trust a man that does not carry a knife so everyone generally has one on them. Also, I wish I had thought of this earlier but I am teaching myself Spanish but have not really been sure what the best things to practice on that would be practical and useful words/phrases to remember, so does anyone have suggestions on that?
