For reference, I was a CNA for about 4 years. Went off and got my degree, I am currently a sleep technologist looking for a pivot. I’ve been in health care a while but was deterred from fully committing to nursing due to the overall toxicity from coworkers in a field that I felt was very reliant on teamwork. Patients im fine with, I’ve been spit on, peed on, the yuckiness doesn’t bug me. The one thing I can’t stand is a “hostile” work environment with regard to coworkers.
I would just like to hear from some of you with regard to experience working in this field whether it be in-patient or out-patient. I am relatively introverted, and I can withstand some toxicity in doses but the constant bickering of the nursing floor always turned me off. I’m also a night shifter, so once registered I would hope to stick to mostly nights.
If I were to find myself in that environment, how much of it would be avoidable? Are there opportunities to limit the amount of time I spend around the toxicity? What is the hour to hour day look like? Also, what are some strategies you use to avoid things like that?
I am early 30s male and am expected to start the program this fall. I’m having second thoughts after perusing this sub.
Thank you for your feedback and time.
