Hi all,

We just bought our first home, which came with a lovely garden. I thought of myself as semi-beginner - I can take care of vegetables, but never really did much gardening work. Is there a go-to resource/book I could read to get me started. There are three areas that I need help at the moment, but likely there are going to be much more:

  1. We have two rose bushes that are a bit out of control and I want to trim them for aesthetic purposes. I assume I can't do much at this time of year, but limited trimming should still be possible

  2. We have a big lilac tree, that is also taking over a significant portion of the garden (as in low branches). I would like to trim it so it gets more height before spreading out (so we can walk beneath the tree)

  3. For surfaces, there are a lot of shrubs, bushes and flowers that we are handling, but am looking to change the classic grass lawn to clover and wildflowers. Do we need to get a full clean up and reseed in the autumn or can continuously plant more clover/wildflower (at appropriate times) until these take over (or it would be a mixed lawn with everything, which is fine as well).
