UCLA vs UCSD transfer for law/politics goals (need advice)
Hey guys, I’m currently trying to decide between UCLA and UCSD as a transfer student and I’d really appreciate some outside opinions because I honestly keep going back and forth.
For context, I’m from San Diego and my long-term goal is law school. I’m really interested in politics/public service and eventually want to go into law, possibly agricultural or environmental law. I’ve already done internships with local legislators and definitely want to continue building connections and getting involved during undergrad.
I was admitted to UCLA as a Pre-History major, and at UCSD I’d probably pursue something related to history/political science. I visited UCLA recently and honestly loved it. The campus atmosphere, social scene, energy, opportunities, all of it just felt exciting and inspiring. I could genuinely picture myself there.
At the same time though, I’m trying to think realistically about what would actually set me up best for law school. From everything I’ve heard, GPA and LSAT matter way more than undergrad prestige for law admissions, which is where a lot of my hesitation comes from.
Part of me feels like UCLA could open a lot of doors in terms of networking, internships, and opportunities, especially with my interests. But I also worry about the stress, competition, and whether being in that environment could hurt my GPA. I’m also trying to graduate in 2 years as a transfer, so I’ve been thinking a lot about workload and balance too.
UCSD feels like the safer and more stable option in some ways since it’s closer to home, closer to my support system, and probably a calmer environment overall. I feel like there’s a good chance I’d be able to stay more balanced there academically and mentally. But then I start wondering if I’d regret turning down UCLA later on.
I honestly wouldn’t care about going to the “more prestigious” undergrad if choosing the other school gave me a better shot at ending up at a top law school later. Like, I’d rather go to UCSD and end up at UCLA Law than force UCLA undergrad and make things harder for myself if that makes sense.
Would really appreciate any thoughts, especially from transfers, pre-law students, or anyone who had to choose between prestige and fit. Thanks guys!
