Hi, I'll be studying abroad in Japan next semester from Sept-Dec. I'm really torn on how much luggage to bring (not as in what to put inside of the luggage, but how many suitcases). Should I do 1 checked, 1 carry-on, and 1 personal item? I have two carry-on sized suitcases already so would need to buy a checked bag (but that's not a big concern for me).

I hear that I should put a duffel bag inside of the checked bag for purchases while in Japan, but would that be only in the case that I don't bring a carry on and the duffel would count as the carry on on the way home? Pls bestow me with your guys' knowledge!!
