context: I started in consulting fresh out of varsity and got an opportunity to work on a few projects with the big banks. The projects dried up and I slowly saw my career begin to fade as I started going months without doing anything, that’s when I moved to big tech. Prominent company that moved me to another province with the promise of pioneering a department in my line of work (This was a year and 8 months ago). Fast forward, I delivered value , put my head down and did the most on the product I was placed on. Come promotion time; I was told that there’s a long list of people waiting to be promoted and I essentially needed to wait my turn so it doesn’t matter how hard I work, that’s just how it is.

I’m currently 25 and I have responsibilities, the salary was not cutting it in this city I live in so I needed a promotion really bad, I can’t afford to wait another 2 years else; I’ll be swimming in debt which I already am so I started job hunting and eventually landed an offer with better pay. The problem is this role is in a smaller company (more start up like) and they’re essentially starting an entire branch in the country so things are still undefined. I already took the job and I started 2 days ago and I feel like I made a mistake.

With my previous role I had WFM flexibility, big corp name vut growth was slower than what I want, here I have growth prospects, bigger title, better pay but it’s not big corp and in office 3s times a week with an office that has 2 other people (head office is outside the country). I feel like I made a mistake, any advice would be helpful regarding the mental shift from a large corp to a semi startup environment. what are some of your experiences? anything would be helpful to stop me from spiralling. Thanks
