Distinguished Professor David Hummels should be Purdue's next president.

This link is to an awesome lecture he gave at Kelley this year, about the challenges of AI in both the new-grad workforce and in how we teach students. I think this is worth watching generally, but it's especially worth watching in the context of his qualifications to lead a university today.

Hummels is someone who understands both the breath of the academy as well as the importance of communication. He's the co-author of a Substack blog called Finding Equilibrium, which is all about casting an analytical lens on administrative and policy decisions that have an impact on universities. If there's a problem in academia, chances are he's thought about it, if not written about it.

He also unequivocally has the experience required to do the job. He served as Dean of Krannert for many years until its rename.

(Apologies for the repost. The previous link was broken.)

> WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — As part of Purdue University’s yearlong commemoration of the 250th birthday of the United States of America, university leadership, dignitaries and students will dedicate a 16-story-tall flagpole at Ross-Ade Stadium on Wednesday (April 29) during Purdue Day of Giving. > > The flagpole, which will extend 160 feet above the field and display a 30-by-50-foot American flag, was a gift from former Purdue Board of Trustees Chair Michael Berghoff (BS industrial management ’85) and his wife, Kristin (BS retail management ’85); and John Chiminski (MS electrical engineering ’87) and his wife, Laura. > > In the spirit of America250, Purdue is celebrating the nation’s semiquincentennial throughout 2026 by spotlighting innovative pursuits by Boilermakers past and present while preparing students for future innovative endeavors for the greater good of the nation. > > “As we mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America, this flagpole dedication is a moment of profound significance at this American public university,” Purdue President Mung Chiang said. “It is a moving reminder of the many contributions made by generations of Boilermakers to our country, and a testament that our university shall remain a long-lasting bastion of individual freedom.”

I think I might have hexed my scanner for life by feeding that abomination in there.

Anyway...the Democratic Party primary is also going on right now and ends next Tuesday, May 5.

There are 3 candidates for Congress from Greater Lafayette worth your time to learn more about: Paul McPherson (Purdue BIDC Director and Professor of Practice in Mechanical Engineering Technology), Drew Cox (Purdue Music instructor), and Joe Mackey (founder of a local cancer foundation).
