thoughts on applying to Chinese universities as an ABC
I’m currently 17 years old and I am applying to colleges in a couple of months as I am almost done with my junior year. The Bay Area is incredibly competitive with grades and students and I’m not sure if I can get in into the schools I want (UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC) due to both money cost and my application’s ability to stand out compared to the sea of extraordinary applicants. I was hoping to major in a mix of either applied math + food science or applied math + business/hospitality, because I hope to one day create a bakery chain startup. My parents suggested I apply to Chinese universities like Zhejiang University and Peking university, saying that they offer great resources to international students and I can get to know a diverse group of ppl who can help further advance my dream of creating a restaurant chain. They also claimed that tuition is cheaper and that China has an amazing food environment I could learn from (China’s food is always the best!). However I’m a bit worried about adjusting to the campus there as an ABC who barely got a 5 in AP Chinese. And I’m not sure if I trust their judgement and I can’t find anything online about China’s STEM education for international students as well as the social culture surrounding ABCs. Any advice is welcomed!!
