Are all woods safe for cooking?

I just got into whittling and I'm still on my second project (a fox). But I was thinking in maybe making a spoon next but I'm not sure if all woods are safe for cooking. I'm currently using cedar because I don't have basswood in my country (Mexico). Also I'm polishing with besswax and mineral oil.

Advice for a newbie

I just got into whittling and I'm trying to carve a fox for my second project here. The problem is that I don't know how to make the tail (left part) thinner since the grain from my wood runs sideways (red arrow). I'm working on white cedar since basswood is not available in my region (Mexico). I tried Home Depot pine but it's much harder. Also that's the knife I'm using as my main tool.

Thank you all!
