Would you actually notice 42 dB vs 39 dB from a powered chiropractic table?

I work on the motor/drive side of powered treatment tables, and recently I've gone a little too far down the rabbit hole of reducing motor noise.

In one test setup, we got maximum operating noise from about 42.1 dB down to 38.9 dB, measured 15 cm away with roughly 32 dB ambient noise.

It wasn't one big change. It came from a combination of lower motor speed, a large reduction ratio, FOC control, and some structural damping to deal with vibration/resonance.

As an engineering problem, getting it below 40 dB was satisfying.

Then I had the obvious question:

Would anyone using the table actually care about the difference between 42 and 39 dB?

We've had the same debate around movement quality.

Speed variation dropped from roughly 4.8% to 3.0%, and the motor became better at maintaining speed when the load changes.

You can see both differences clearly in the measurements.

But I'm starting to think the numbers themselves may matter less than how the movement feels.

For example, a small jerk when the table starts moving might be more noticeable than a 3 dB noise reduction. Same with vibration, motor pitch, or a change in speed when a patient shifts their weight.

For chiropractors who use powered/hi-lo tables all day:

Which of those things do you actually notice in practice?

I'm especially curious whether you've ever used a table that looked perfectly normal on paper but just somehow felt noticeably smoother, quieter, or better built than another one.
