Sapphic beauty and the beast: *Beast* concept art and designs! 🌹

I'm taking a break for a while, but I just wanted to show you all how I designed the beast for my sapphic version of beauty and the beast.

I wanted a design that would make you wonder if the person cursed was a man or a woman.

So in some designs I added elements of both male and female features in different animals.

I also wanted a vibe of those 80's dark fantasy movies, like labyrinth, or the dark crystal.

I was first trying cats.

But I opted for more sharp, strict lines.

Then I was trying owls, then cattle, then sheep.

But none of them felt right.

I tried wolves.

But I wanted it to have luxurious hair, And I couldn't really do that on a wolf.

Then I tried goats, but having a beard wouldn't suit it.

After weeks, of coming up with different combinations, I was getting fed up.

One of the days I had purchased myself a "Queen" t-shirt, because I love the band, and I got inspired by the designs of the lions on the logo.

The curly hair, the bright orange fur.

I went back over my designs, I tried lions but it just couldn't work without it looking completely male.

Then I went back to cats.

I wanted it ugly, but gentle.

Unpleasant, but cuddly.

And that's when I decided, I should model it after a Persian cat.

And it works.

Obviously I added unnatural features like horns, tusks and fangs.

So with that all said and done, that's how I designed the beast.

I hope you all enjoy my sketches, and my artwork!

Sapphic beauty and the beast re- draw πŸ”

(the first images are the re drawn ones. The second were the original).

So in my last post I shared some sketches.

They were merely concept drawings.

And it was brought to my attention that the human version of the beast looked too masculine.

And you were all absolutely right.

I was kinda of irked at the fact that the design was deemed too masculine, but looking at it again, I can see why.

For some reason when designing characters, I like to exaggerate features.

And I give characters small "insecurities".

For example, the bags under their eyes.

Or prominent noses.

And I am not good at drawing people as you can tell.

I'd honestly rather animate a horse.

But making my own adaptation of beauty and the beast, has been a project I have been working on for years.

And I want it to be a special one.

So I just decided to re draw all images of the human version of the beast.

I also wanted to keep in mind of having elements of both forms.

Like the curly hair, and the eyebrows.

Things that need to be kept.

I hope you all sort of enjoy my artwork.

And if I hear another remark about the design.... I'll keep it in mind, and cry myself to sleep.

Sapphic Beauty and the Beast sketches! πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆπŸŒΉ

(bonus beast's reading glasses, because I felt like drawing it)

These sketches are just to get a feeling of the characters, and their designs, and how well they contrast each other.

To make each character feel like a real person.

Subtle things like giving the beast some reading glasses,

Just to make her feel more human, and to have human issues.

And again with more female gaze designs.

I made the human version of the beast not conventionally attractive, by giving her a kind of robust look.

The big brow, the large nose, and the slanted eyes.

For beauty, I'm still working on her.

That's why she's sort of off model in some drawings.

She's also a complicated character.

Beauty has her own human issues too.

But again, still working on that.

The reason why I started this project, because I feel, as gay individual myself, I feel there is not a lot of wlw (women loving women) representations.

Sure there's a few movies and books and TV shows, but that's really only a handful. And most of them are for the male gaze.

I also started this project because well, most Beauty and the beast adaptations are kind of the same.

So, I hope you all enjoy my artwork!

Sapphic Beauty and the beast? πŸ€”πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

(some pictures of Beauty may be off model, as I'm not good at drawing faces, and I'm just trying this narrative out)

I was looking through my scripts of my own adaptation of beauty and the beast, and it occurred to me, that it's nothing different than what we have seen before in terms of adapting Beauty and the beast.

I've always wanted to make a sapphic graphic novel, and a story that has designs for the female gaze.

And with the illustrations I have here, I tried to give an 80's dark fantasy vibe.

Taking little hints from Ralph bakshi films, with those real scratchy lines.

And you will not believe how long it took me to design the beast.

But I've decided that a simple but detailed design should suffice.

I modelled her after a Persian cat, one of the most "ugliest" cats. Even though they are quite odd looking, they're still cuddly and gentle.

Welp, I hope you all enjoy my artwork!

(P.s, if you look closely in slide 2, I've added a little Easter egg!)

My version of beauty and the beast, redraw! 🌹

(the first pic is the re-drawing of the second)

(Labeled misc, as this is my own interpretation)

It's been a while, but I'm back, with a re-draw.

I'm really glad i re-drew it, as you could tell I wasn't good at drawing human faces, and still probably not.

Not only that, but beast's design aswell.

In my original drawing, his facial features are all over the place, and to put an ugly "VHS" filter over it, just makes it worse.

He looks more beastly.

And Beauty looks more... Well beautiful.

Well, I hope you all enjoy my artwork!

Concept art Simba Sketch 🦁

I don't really know what to say, apart from how I woke up wanting to draw adult Simba. Then it occurred to me that it has been forever since I drew the concept art version of him.

I quite like the concept art version, however I do understand that he'd have been a pain to animate.

But overall, just a really cool design that fits the character. A messy, traumatised, depressed adult.

Well, I hope you all enjoy my artwork!

Muffy re-draw! πŸ¦πŸ‘‘

Looking back to previous artworks, and saw this absolute monstrosity.

What compelled me to post it, I will never know. Took some nerve to do so.

I needed to redraw it.

His eyes are too big, his nose aswell is too big. Everything is horrendous.

With all the negativity out of the way, I done what I did best. Re drawing it.

I realised I was trying to draw the expression muffy had, but failed miserably.

And I had to add his little loose hairs, just to make him look more younger, and youthful. And also a nod to his son's soon to be mane.

Welp, it's been awhile, and I hope you all enjoy my artwork.

Bird-like beast? πŸ¦‰πŸŒΉ

I'm trying to come up with a new concept of a bird-like beast. Taking inspiration from "Panna a Netvor" and also "the dark crystal", I find it very difficult to create a good character design.

You have to make the beast ugly but lovable at the same time. So, this is the best I could come up with.

The ugly eye bags, the crinkled beak and ears, but a soft fluffy exterior. I added ears, because he'd just look like a bird if I hadn't. He's a beast. Not one specific animal.

If anyone wants to suggest changes, or if you have your own concepts, feel free to share! I want to know how you tackle character designs.

I hope you all enjoy my artwork.

Adolescent Mufasa Sketch 🦁

I've been real busy, so spare time to draw has been scarce.

I hope y'all didn't miss me too much.

"Why has Mufasa's side parting have Simba's hair style?"

Because, he's a younger Mufasa. He's going to be messy, he hasn't quite figured everything out. We see his side parting get messy during the stampede, obviously because there's a rush, he's been thrown around a lot, but it could also be a glimpse of his younger self. He's scared, he feels almost immature for not keeping Simba safe. Well, that's my head canon/rant over.

I hope you all enjoy my artwork!

Official production art acquired! 🌹

I have recently acquired an actual production piece from the 1991 Disney adaptation.

Acquired from "Animation sensations: Georgetown Frame Shoppe". A really cool company, and I'd highly recommend them to anyone who wants to collect.

Looking into it, I assume this key frame was by Glen Keane, or Aaron Blaise. If anyone knows who drew this, please feel free to comment.

This is actually a gift for my father. (He doesn't have Reddit 🀫) Because, not only is it for his birthday, but for the memories we had with this film. We'd always watch it on dvd. It was our favourite film. I hope that it still is.

Thank you Georgetown Frame shoppe! And thank you dad, for all the memories.

Hello again!

Another sketch, and this time, Simba's uncle, scar.

I don't really have much to say, apart from when looking for reference images, they all seemed simple, I wanted a challenge. So I chose the image, of when scar says "Precisely". It seemed more of a challenge, as his proportions are different than any other character. Which is actually what his animator, Andreas deja said. He didn't want scar to look like a normal lion.

So, with all that said, I hope you all enjoy my artwork.
