Fridge not getting cold in Hillcrest? Try these 4 quick DIY fixes first

Hey everyone,

Before you panic-buy a new fridge or pay a call-out fee to anyone, try these 4 quick troubleshooting steps. You can usually fix it yourself in 10 minutes:

  • 1. The Surge Trap: If the fridge is dead silent and the light is off, plug a kettle directly into the raw wall socket. If the kettle boils, your fridge is fine—your surge adaptor just sacrificed itself to save your compressor.
  • 2. The Mist Freeze: Is the freezer working but the fridge section is a sauna? Our high humidity means if the door is left cracked even slightly, the internal cooling vents freeze solid. Unplug it, pack food in coolers, and let it completely defrost for 24 hours to clear the airways.
  • 3. The Pet Hair Clog: If you have pets, their fur gets sucked straight under the fridge. Caked dust and hair suffocate the condenser coils, causing the compressor to overheat and shut down. Give the back/bottom grilles a quick vacuum.
  • 4. The paper Test: Trap a piece of paper in the door. If it pulls out with zero resistance, your rubber seals are leaking cold air. Wipe them down with warm, soapy water—sometimes sticky residue just stops them from sealing properly.

Still warm? We’re just down the road.

If you’ve tried a defrost, cleaned the coils, and you still hear a clicking sound or feel no cold air, it’s likely a component failure (like a fan motor or thermostat).

If it gets to that point, Smart Appliance Centre CC is fully local, honest, and we don't do hidden fees.

If your fridge is acting up right now, drop the symptoms and model in the comments below, and we'll happily help you troubleshoot it here for free!

ealing with an Elba gas stove that won’t stay lit? Here’s a 5-minute fix for Durban locals.

Hey everyone,

We fix appliances here in Durban, and lately, we’ve seen a huge spike in Elba gas stoves (especially the hobs) having the same issue: The burner ignites, but the flame dies the second you let go of the knob.

Before you call a technician or assume the stove is broken, try these three things (they fix about 70% of the cases we see):

  1. The "Durban Humidity" Carbon Fix: Our salty air can cause a thin layer of carbon/oxidation on the thermocouple (that little brass-colored pin next to the burner). Give it a light rub with a piece of sandpaper or the green side of a sponge. It needs to "feel" the heat to tell the valve to stay open.
  2. The Knob Gap: Sometimes the plastic knob hits the faceplate before the valve is fully depressed. Pull the knob off, put a tiny piece of folded paper or a small washer inside the hole of the knob, and push it back on. This allows you to press the valve deeper.
  3. The Misaligned Cap: If your burner cap is even 1mm off-center, the flame won't hit the thermocouple. Make sure it's seated perfectly flat.

If those don't work, your thermocouple likely needs to be fixed (common after 3-5 years).
