Can Strong Research Experience and an 80th Percentile PGRE Help Offset a ~3.3 GPA for Astronomy PhD Admissions?

I would appreciate some honest advice from people familiar with Astronomy and Astrophysics PhD admissions.

I am an international applicant from a non physics STEM background with a GPA of about 3.3. I realize this is well below the average GPA often reported for top Astronomy programs. However, I have several years of research experience in a specialized astrophysics area, multiple publications, and a Physics GRE score above the 80th percentile.

Many of the research groups that closely match my interests are at T10 to T20 programs, where the average admitted GPA appears to be much higher.

In your experience, how do admissions committees weigh GPA against research experience, publications, research fit, and evidence of physics preparation? Have you seen applicants with a GPA around 3.3 succeed at highly ranked programs because of a strong research record?

I am genuinely trying to understand how competitive a profile like this would be. Thank you for any insights.

Physics PhD Admissions Chances (Third Cycle) + CV Feedback Appreciated

Hi everyone,

I'm preparing for my third application cycle and would appreciate some honest feedback on my chances and my CV.

I have a relatively low undergraduate GPA from an Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree, which I know is the weakest part of my application. In my previous two cycles, I applied mainly to Master's programs and was rejected from all of them.

Since then, I've significantly strengthened my profile. I now have GRE and Physics GRE scores, several publications (including first-author work), and over the past year I've added two more papers. My research is focused on a very specific niche within astrophysics/cosmology, and all of my publications are directly related to that area.

Given my history of rejections and my GPA, I'm genuinely unsure whether applying to Physics PhD programs is realistic or if I'm aiming too high.

I've attached my CV. Any honest assessment of my chances, as well as any criticism of my CV, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
