Middle-Grade Summer Book Club

I have been dragooned into running a summer book club for the neighborhood kids (including my two). I have a range of readers from very enthusiastic to very reluctant, so I need something that will appeal to 9 year olds up to 12 year olds, girls and boys. A firecracker in book form.

I'm giving preference to books with animals in then. The book needs to have some humor (not overt, just it can't take itself too seriously) and some adventure, and it can't be too sad. It needs to be really fairly recent. We can work up to the classics later (ya'll, these are people who were born since 2014. PERCY JACKSON is classic to them, OK?)

So far on my list I have things like "The Eyes & the Impossible" by Dave Eggers, "Fish in a Tree" by Lynda Mullaly Hunt, "We Dream of Space" by Erin Entrada Kelly," "The Lions' Run" by Sara Pennypaker, and "Full of Beans" by Jennifer Holm.

Please hit me with your best shots.
