Had softball sized hail, whole neighborhood needed new roofs, (and gutters, siding, and some trees...) Roofer came highly recommended by a GC I've used for 20 years, but I was out of town when the install was done, (my mistake, but unavoidable.) When I went up to look, I saw his crew didn't install ice and water barriers around any of the vents or pipes, and did not tear out the old flashing around the chimney, they just re-roofed around the old flashing, (which now leaks...) The barriers and flashing were all clearly in the written scope and the contract, it just didn't get done. (Maybe his guys took some shortcuts, got in a hurry, were new, who knows.) Roofer said he'd make it right, (and I've not paid beyond a nominal deposit), and I'm good with making it right, but I actually want it right and not leaking down the road. My expectations, (again with no proper knowledge on my part), is that the proper fix is to have the new shingles removed enough to properly install the ice and water barriers, the same to remove the old chimney flashing, and it all properly installed and then the shingles replaced to look properly like what we agreed to and the work under it right. Unfortunately I don't have the knowledge personally to check that sort of thing, so I was going to hire, (at my cost, not his), a home inspector or other roofer to verify the work before I pay. Would anyone have any other recommendations for this type of situation? I understand things go wrong and employees make bad calls, as long as it's right in the end and looks good, I'm happy, but I don't have the knowledge to check this type of work myself and could use some help. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
