Is it a bad idea to apply for OPT during the 60-day grace period after graduation?
Hi everyone,
I’m an F-1 student currently planning to graduate in June with an Associate of Arts degree in Political Science. I’m trying to figure out the best timing for applying for post-completion OPT.
I understand that after my program end date/graduation date, there is a 60-day grace period in the U.S. My question is: is it possible and advisable to apply for OPT after graduation during that 60-day grace period, or is that considered risky?
The reason I’m considering waiting is that I’d ideally like to maximise my summer. I have a road trip planned in August, and I’m also hoping to do some volunteer-related things before starting work. Ideally, I would start working sometime in the fall rather than immediately after graduation.
My main concern is timing. Since my degree is in Political Science, I know it may take some time to find a job that clearly relates to my field of study. I don’t want to apply too late and create problems for myself, but I also don’t want to start my OPT window earlier than necessary if I’m not actually ready to begin working.
For anyone who has gone through this process, especially people who applied after graduation or waited until the grace period, what would you recommend? Was it manageable, or did it create unnecessary stress? Are there any timing issues, travel concerns, or job search problems I should be aware of?
I’m also interested in any general advice about choosing an OPT start date, finding degree-related work with a Political Science degree, and avoiding mistakes during the application process.
Thanks in advance. I’m planning to speak with my DSO as well, but I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have gone through it.
