Hall Tree Build

The end product of telling my wife “Don’t buy that online I can build one”. This hall tree originated from a modified set of $5 plans she found on Etsy.

The project started last August and finally wrapped up this week utilizing the vast amount of free time I have (6-10 work schedule). Red oak dyed Intense Black/Charcoal with Rubio Monocoat. I wasn’t sure about the color choice until it was complete; the charcoal accent keep the oak’s grain visible and depending on the angle you see something different.

I started the project utilizing the Kreg jig for pocket holes to assemble to cabinets but by the end I had finally justified the purchase of a Festool Domino and a few of their sanders which made me wonder why I had waited so long.

Due to size/weight constraints the unit breaks down into three pieces and is reassembled using screw-in threaded connectors.

The raised panel doors/drawer fronts were new to me and set up time on the router table involved a fair amount of trial and error but now that I have sorted it out shouldn’t be an issue moving forward.

The Rubio Monocoat was another first for me as well. I was hesitant to dye this oak black but it was what my wife wanted to see. This was the best compromise to not completely lose the character of the wood in my opinion.

It was a good excuse to accumulate some new tools and learn some new skills (first time building my own doors/drawer fronts and new finish techniques).
