replanting a very young tree (branch)

Hello,

First off, if this isn't the place for my question, I apologize and please feel free to redirect me...

Anyway, so I have a question regarding the planting of a very young tree, if it can be called a tree already. We found a very young oak tree, not more then 30 cm (a foot) high. I had four leaves on top and seemed to be in good health. However it was recently uprooted and just lay on the side of the road. Our dog found it and we decided to give a chance on a new life in our garden.

We kept the roots wet in a paper tissue we had with us and took it home. We planted it in new soil we had left from planting some other flowers this month. Gave it plenty of water and at first it seemed happy. But we are now about a week later and the leaves have started to turn yellow and are hanging very badly. It does not look like it's going to make it.

Can anyone give us any advice on how to save this young tree? Or were we trying to help a lost cause to begin with?

Thanks in advance for any help!
