Scaling Up – Best Setup for Casting Extraction?

Scaling up over the next 6–12 months and looking for suggestions on casting production/extraction setups.

Currently running an old water tank compost setup with multiple internal feeding stations for breeder bins.

As numbers grow, the next step is producing more castings, mainly for liquid fertiliser extraction.

What setups would you recommend?

-Windrows
-Deep IBC setups
-Multiple shallow troughs
-Continuous flow-through
-Anything else I’m missing?

Main focus is something scalable and easy to harvest. Interested to hear what’s worked for others.

15,000 Worms Later and I Still Have Too Much Food Waste

Good problem to have , I’ve now got a steady stream of food waste coming in from various places, but I’m getting more than I can currently process.

The worms are already being well fed, probably overfed if anything. I’ve added 5,000 worms three separate times over the past three months, so around 15,000 worms in total, and I’m now giving them time to breed and build up their population.

I’m also feeding some of the excess to the chickens and composting what I can.

I don’t have access to any more freezer space, and freezing it probably wouldn’t make much sense anyway as the food waste is coming in continuously.

For those who have scaled up their systems, what would you do with the excess in the meantime? Any good ways to pre-process, store or utilise it without simply overloading the worm beds?

First harvest from my worm farm… ready to put the kettle on?

Pulled some compost out of my worm farm today and gave it its first screen.

Keen to get some feedback on the structure and overall quality. It’s only been through one coarse screen, so there’s still a few small wood fibres and larger bits in there.

Would you consider this ready for brewing compost tea, or would you keep processing it? Any tips or suggestions are welcome.

First attempt at screening my homemade compost – how does it look?

First crack at screening some compost that started life in the compost bin before ending up in the worm farm.

Needed some top dressing for the plants and thought I’d see if I could save a trip to the big green shed.

Keen to get some feedback on the structure and how it looks. It’s only been through one coarse screen, so there’s still a few small wood fibres and larger bits in there.

How does it look? Anything you’d do differently?

Built a rough modular worm farm expansion setup and looking for feedback before scaling hard.

Current layout is split into 4 sections:

A – 12–16 month old compost
Mostly fully broken down organic matter. Dark and pretty stable now. Planning for this to become one of the primary worm production zones.

B – Around 4 month old compost
Still cooking and definitely early days. More heat/activity still happening compared to A.

C – Original worm farm
Open-bottom bin sitting directly onto compost. Added ~1000 worms about a month ago and they seem to be settling in well.

D – Phase 2 worm farm build
Using an open-ended drum setup. Current layers are:

Cardboard
~1 foot compost
Sheep wool
More compost
Kitchen scraps
Top layer of shredded paper

Planning to introduce another 5000 worms into section D shortly.

Short-term plan is to slowly encourage worms from section C into section A by gradually lifting the bin off the ground over time and letting them migrate naturally.

Long-term goal is:

Turn both A and B into large active worm zones
Reach roughly 20,000 worms by end of year
Create a self-sustaining continuous compost/worm system
