Hoppin’ John

Hoppin’ John

If you guessed some sort of pea/rice or bean/ rice concoction, you basically got it. I love the name but no one really knows the origin of that. Here's an article about it, if you are interested.

The peas are said to resemble coins, and the dish is traditionally served with greens, which represents money. If you eat them on New Year's Day, prosperity is bound to follow you in the new year.

The recipe I used calls for celery and bell pepper, which I didn't have today. It still was delicious. I garnished with home grown red and orange tomatoes and some basil just for the greenness of it. Turns out basil is pretty tasty on Hoppin John. I also turned the recipe into a one pot dish by adding extra chicken broth and the rice near the end of the cooking time. I’m just lazy like that!

We usually just eat our peas as peas, but I figured you guys deserved a Southern treat!

Using those peas

This is a traditional southern dish, often eaten at New Years for prosperity to come. I didn’t have all the ingredients for the actual recipe, but in this busy preserving season, it’s close enough. I also won’t be sharing the photographed steps tonight like our friend Sticky (who has time for all that?) but I’ll be back to confirm your correct answers.

Do you guys eat these?

Do you know what they are? Picked this morning and being processed this afternoon. I feel like the Little Red Hen. If you know, you know.

Chili oil-cheddar sourdough loaf

I’m curious to know what inclusions you have seen or done in basic sourdough loaves? This is one I did today. It’s chili crunch oil and cheddar cheese. I think the use of inclusions probably caused the ear to be smaller than usual, but I like the swirl and crumb. I think this might be nice as avocado toast or with a runny fried egg.

Great ideas

This is pretty much your fantastic ideas rolled into one and mashed with our glut of farm fresh eggs-Angel Food cake with yesterday’s lemon curd and fresh berries. Thank you for a delicious dessert.

Today’s answer is from 19th century England

It probably originated with the Quakers and of course, is lemon curd, as you all guessed. Hopefully the method might be slightly new to you, because it is a microwave recipe and is extremely easy. Thanks to those of you who played along. As promised, our Sticky Out Host is much more accomplished than I. (It’s a lot of work detailing all those steps, y’all!) Also, no zest for us, because, (sigh) Grandchildren! But I like the idea of zest in with the sugar, and you can strain the zest out if you choose.
