Coffee cannot be considered vegan

I'm not vegan, but as a horse person, I'm very careful about where my coffee is sourced from. Coffee produced in countries with steep terrain typically uses equine labor. Horses or donkeys are used to pack out the coffee beans. I've seen weights as much as 200lbs worth of coffee beans on one animal, and multiple trips a day up and down very steep terrain.

This is in countries where animal welfare regulations don't adhere to the same standards as other parts of the Western world. Veterinary care is often limited or not as specialized.

Even some coffee brands post pictures of animals packing coffee, and sometimes these animals look like they are in pain, wearing poorly fitted packs, or overweighted packs.

This is an issue that I never see vegans address. Is it because coffee is so addictive that it's overlooked? If you care about animal welfare, why don't you make sure your coffee comes from farmers who use mechanical harvesters and transport?
