Pivoting from QC to R&D: How to leverage a diverse Bio/BME background (Wet Lab, Embedded Systems, Materials) for R&D Engineering ?
Hey everyone,
I’m looking for some strategic advice on how to pivot into R&D or Design Engineering within MedTech/Biotech. I graduated with an MS in Biomedical Engineering (Dec 2025) and currently work as a Quality Control Analyst at Grifols Diagnostics (blood plasma lab).
My background is very multidisciplinary, and because I don't have a traditional pure ME or EE background, I’m trying to figure out how to best position myself or what specific skills I need to double down on.
Here is a snapshot of my technical background:
- Undergrad (Biology): Heavy wet-lab research running assays for endometrial cancer-like cells.
- Grad Thesis (Materials Science): Focused on the characterization of nickel nanoparticle synthesis. Gained heavy hands-on experience with TEM, SEM, XRD, and DLS. This work actually resulted in a co-authored publication on mapping nickel nanoparticle size and surface chemistry for catalytic applications.
- Software & Modeling: Modeled type 1 and type 2 diabetes by analyzing blood glucose physiology graphs in MATLAB/Simulink, developing variables for secretion/excretion rates.
- Hardware & Embedded: Developed firmware on a wolfSSL platform using a MAX78000 microcontroller to implement security certificates and keys for embedded medical devices (diabetic monitoring device) to prevent hijacking.
- Quality & Documentation: Extensive experience with SOP development, GMP adherence, and strict regulatory documentation through my current QC Analyst role.
- Programming: Introductory C Programming and Python
- CAD: I am CSWA certified in SolidWorks.
What I am doing right now: To bridge the gap further into hardware, I am currently prototyping a wearable pulse oximeter using an ESP32 microcontroller, Arduino/C++, and a MAX30102 sensor on a breadboard. I plan to 3D print a casing, document the process, and follow it up with an ECG chest strap monitor.
My Questions for R&D/Industry Professionals:
- Picking a Lane / Specializing: Since my background spans materials characterization, MATLAB modeling, and embedded firmware, should I focus on picking a strict lane to make myself a stronger specialist (e.g., pure material science vs. pure embedded/electrical), or do hiring managers appreciate entry-level candidates showcasing a wider, multidisciplinary base?
- Portfolio Value: Do personal hardware projects (like my current pulse oximeter and ECG prototypes) hold weight when applying for entry-level R&D roles, or should I be spending that time leaning harder into my CSWA SolidWorks skills leveraging the GMP/regulatory knowledge I've built in my current QC role?
- The "Scientist" Route vs. Quality Stepping Stones: Given my heavy wet-lab background and current QC role, I suspect I might have an easier time landing an Associate Scientist or Research Associate position right now rather than a direct Engineering title. Is it common or realistic to use an Associate Scientist or Quality Engineer role as a foot in the door at a MedTech company, and later transition internally into a Design/R&D Engineering role?
- Networking for Entry-Level Roles: What is your advice on looking for positions and effectively networking? I've been trying to put myself out there through LinkedIn, reaching out to recruiters, and attending networking events, but I am not getting bites past the first-round interviews. Any tips on how to effectively network into R&D at this stage?
